Today, October 21, the global kink- and sex-positive community marks the International Fisting Day (IFD). What is today firmly anchored in the queer calendar owes its existence to a targeted initiative fifteen years ago: American queer-porn pioneers Courtney Trouble and Jiz Lee launched the day in 2011 to bring a practice that had long been taboo out of the shadows and redefine it radically. In Germany, the Cologne-based community organization Fistwerk, among others, accompanies the day with educational and informational offerings.

Until the early 2010s, fist-fisting was perceived in the media—and by large parts of the queer community—as the domain of cisgender men in the gay leather scene. Filmmaker and producer Courtney Trouble, along with non-binary performer and author Jiz Lee, stepped forward to fundamentally broaden that image.
The immediate trigger was the censorship of porn films that included fist-fisting. Courtney Trouble wanted to release a scene featuring Jiz Lee, but distributors demanded cutting such scenes out of fear of laws against obscene acts. Since the footage in question could not be edited without removing a crucial part of the scene, the two decided to launch their own day of action.

On October 21, 2011, the two launched the first official call for International Fisting Day across their platforms and networks. Their core aims still shape the day today: fist-fisting should be visible as a pleasurable practice for all genders and anatomies—including vulvar, vaginal, and anal fisting for lesbian, transgender, nonbinary, and other queer people.
The day also aims to educate about the practice and thereby demystify the topic. The focus is on preventing injuries through knowledge, such as providing anatomical basics, the consistent use of sturdy nitrile or latex gloves, generous use of appropriate lubricants, and protecting delicate mucous membranes. Kink, BDSM, and experimental sexuality should also be recognized as legitimate forms of sexual self-determination and queer culture.
Focus: Radical Consent and Mindfulness
The discourse shaped by Trouble and Lee places consent at the heart of the practice. Contrary to common stereotypes of raw roughness, fist-fisting requires a high degree of care and communication: manual exploration demands absolute synchronization between the giving and receiving person.
The principle of continuous consent is mandatory: every nuance of breathing, every change in muscle tone is observed. Painkillers or numbing substances are strictly taboo in practice, as the body’s natural pain response forms an indispensable protective boundary. Fisting thus becomes an act of radical trust, intense closeness, and mutual care.
May 5th is also a Fisting Day
Today’s global celebration on October 21 does not contradict the scene’s second traditional date: May 5. This date was created in 2025 as International Fisting Day by the Fist Club Europe in Berlin (TheColu.mn reported). Unlike October 21, which was chosen more by chance, May 5 was deliberately set: the number 5 symbolizes the five fingers of the hand. The day with two fives had already been informally celebrated in clubs as Fisting Day.
