Stage star Florentina Holzinger will open the 2027/28 season for the Komische Oper Berlin next year with a new work staged at Tempelhof Airport. The Austrian exceptional artist’s new production is devoted to the subject of war, according to the opera house. It centers on the ideological drivers behind war, with both new and historical compositions.
According to the announcement, managing directors Susanne Moser and Philip Bröking spoke of an extraordinary event and called Holzinger “one of the most boundary-pushing voices of our time.”
Holzinger has become a star in the theater world thanks to her visually arresting productions. She is known for spectacular performances and frequently collaborates with ensembles featuring nude female performers. In Berlin, she keeps returning to the stage: “A Year Without Summer” — a work that explores themes like self-optimization and immortality and includes numerous musical numbers — had its May premiere at the Volksbühne.
Last year, Holzinger was invited to Theatertreffen with her queer opera performance “Sancta.” The orchestra of the Komische Oper Berlin participated. “Ever since then it has been on my bucket list to stage here, and I can hardly wait to do so, especially in the hangar at Tempelhof,” Holzinger said in the release. The performer is set to direct a new piece at the Volksbühne in 2028.
The premiere of the new piece at the Komische Oper — the title has not been announced — will take place on September 18, 2027 in Hangar 4 of the former airport. Eleven additional performances are scheduled through October 2. Tickets go on sale March 23, 2027, with early-bird theater fans gaining exclusive access several days earlier.
