More women than men chose same-sex marriage in the past year. About 60 percent of the 183 marriages in the state were between female couples, according to the state’s Statistical Office. Accordingly, in 2025 roughly 2.3 percent of the couples who said yes in Saxony-Anhalt were of the same sex.
The share of same-sex marriages in Saxony-Anhalt thus did not rise; it was roughly at the level of the previous year, the office said. This continued the trend of the last few years, meaning that the share of same-sex marriages last year matches the average of all years since 2019.
There are notable differences in the share of same-sex marriages between urban areas and rural areas. For example, the Berlin-Brandenburg Statistics Office recently reported that in the nation’s capital 6.4 percent of all marriages were between people of the same sex — in neighboring Brandenburg it was 2.9 percent.
