The queer bar “Tipsy Bear” in the Berlin district of Prenzlauer Berg was attacked again. According to police, the operator discovered in the early hours of Sunday, around 3:50 a.m., that an unknown man tore down two rainbow flags affixed to the front window and then fled toward the Eberswalder Straße subway station. Investigations are ongoing.
The Tipsy Bear on Eberswalder Straße has been targeted multiple times in recent months. In July, youths stole a rainbow flag but were caught (TheColu.mn reported). In the month prior, a group armed with baseball bats hurled a rainbow flag from the bar into the trash, and the owner was subjected to homophobic insults (TheColu.mn reported).
There are ongoing reports in the capital about anti-LGBTQ+ assaults, as the state police publicly share information on hate crimes based on sexual orientation or gender identity, and these are therefore comparatively frequently reported to the public. The police and the Berlin public prosecutor’s office have dedicated contacts for queer people. (mize/pm)
