Stage Entertainment is bringing the musical “The Devil Wears Prada” to Germany. The stage adaptation of the cult film is slated to open in Hamburg in December 2026, the company announced in a current casting call. Following the commercial success in London’s West End, the production will celebrate its first German-language premiere.
At the heart of the story is the young journalist Andy Sachs, who takes a job at the prestigious fashion magazine Runway and encounters the formidable editor Miranda Priestly. In the glamorous yet unforgiving world of fashion, Andy increasingly finds herself torn between her own values and the lofty expectations of her boss.
The musical draws on Lauren Weisberger’s novel as well as the 2006 film adaptation. Elton John supplies the music, with lyrics by Shaina Taub and Mark Sonnenblick, and the book by Kate Wetherhead. Direction and choreography are by Tony Award–winner Jerry Mitchell (“Kinky Boots”), with costumes designed by Gregg Barnes. The West End run premiered in the autumn of 2024 at the Dominion Theatre in London.
The creation of the musical underwent a substantial revision. After an initial test phase in 2022 in Chicago under the direction of Anna D. Shapiro, the reception was mixed, leading to a realignment of both content and artistic approach. With Jerry Mitchell leading the creative team, a reworked version began in Plymouth, United Kingdom, in 2024 before finding success in London. Hamburg will now receive the first international license of this updated version — timed to coincide with the planned release of the film’s sequel.
Which performers will take on the roles of Miranda Priestly and Andy Sachs in the German-language version has not yet been announced. Nor has it been disclosed which Hamburg Stage Theater will host the musical.
