Sexy City Index: Cologne Is Germany’s Sexiest City

The Rhineland metropolis Cologne tops Erotik.com’s Sexy City Index, making it the most erotic city in Germany. In total, Erotik.com surveyed 25 large cities across the country based on six criteria. “The cathedral city demonstrates a strong erotic infrastructure. Eroticism here isn’t a marginal topic, but visible, diverse, and accepted—a reflection of the city’s open, urban way of life,” explains Erotik.com.

Cologne ranks first with 36.9 out of 60 possible points, followed by Dresden (35.5), Berlin (32.2), and Stuttgart (30.8). The two megacities, Hamburg and Munich, sit in the middle of the pack at 12th and 13th place. At the bottom of the list are five cities from North Rhine-Westphalia: Duisburg sits last, ahead of Wuppertal, Bonn, Bochum, and Essen — all of these cities are within a good one-hour drive or less of the winner Cologne (as long as there’s no traffic, i.e., at night).

Gay saunas are also a criterion

Among the six criteria is also the number of gay saunas. “Their presence in a city is an indicator of LGBTQ+ infrastructure and the acceptance of alternative lifestyles,” explains Erotik.com. In addition, the index factors in the number of registered sex shops, swingers’ clubs, and so-called experience cinemas (porn cinemas). Moreover, the measure takes into account Google search interest in sexual content, as well as online porn consumption.

On the topic of gay saunas, Mannheim leads the Sex City Index. Cologne leads in the number of sex shops; Dresden is clearly first in swingers’ clubs; Münster and Mannheim stand out in porn cinemas; Berlin dominates overall in Google search interest, and Frankfurt am Main has the highest porn consumption.

Cologne has repeatedly topped similar statistics in recent years. In the Sexually Liberal City Index 2025, the cathedral city clinched the third place, behind Amsterdam and San Francisco.
