On Wednesday morning, a homophobic insult and threat occurred on a city bus in the northern Berlin district of Waidmannslust. According to initial findings, a 29-year-old man was waiting around 6:20 a.m. at a bus stop on Waidmannsluster Damm at the corner of Oraniendamm for the Line 322. An unknown person is said to have subjected the 29-year-old to homophobic insults, threatened him, and spat on him. The two subsequently boarded the bus that had pulled in, with the 29-year-old later getting off, while the alleged attacker is said to have continued riding.
The ongoing investigation has—as is customary in suspected hate crimes—been taken over by the Police’s State Protection unit at the Berlin State Criminal Police Office. Further details about the individuals involved were not released in the initial report, as is typical.
Berlin repeatedly reports LGBT‑anti‑violence incidents, as the state police actively publicize hate crimes based on sexual orientation or gender identity, making them relatively frequent items in public disclosures. The police and the public prosecutor’s office in the capital maintain dedicated contacts for queer people.
