David Mixner, the long-time gay activist and Democratic fundraiser, is calling for the LGBT community to shut off funds to any Democrat who’s not on the list of supporters for the Respect for Marriage Act. The RMA would repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, passed under former President Bill Clinton, which bans federal recognition of same-gender unions.
Mixner points out that key figures of the Democratic party leadership aren’t on board with the bill — Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer , openly gay Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank, California Congresswoman Maxine Waters, and DCCC Chairperson Chris Van Holle, to name a few — and he’s calling on the community to pressure these key figures, plus your local congresscritters, into supporting the bill as the first step in ending “gay apartheid.”
Mixner was also one of two key activists behind the National Equality March and its parent group, Equality Across America, which is launching an organizing campaign to build a grassroots LGBT lobbying organization.
