Is New York’s Senator Kirsten Gillibrand fishing for cheap votes by going her own way on a DADT repeal strategy? Via Queerty comes news that the Serivicemembers’ Legal Defense Network is calling Gilibrand out for her proposed resolution that would halt all funding to any discharge proceedings initiated under DADT. The SLDN’s preferred strategy is, of course, to seek a full repeal of the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell legislation since, ya know, it’s a law and all, and they worry that a push to de-fund part of the discharge process would halt all momentum in Congress for a repeal, even if it was conceived as a temporary measure until a full repeal can be enacted. Furthermore, as AmericaBlog points out, if it succeeds, “that’s all we’ll get for the rest of the Obama Presidency.”
Gillibrand may have the best of intentions – she’s been a fairly tireless advocate in favor of a repeal since she was appointed to fill Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s vacant senate seat – but she’s also facing an election this fall, possibly tempting her to not stick to the script as she looks for extra votes.
