The National: ENDA Dead Due To Transphobia in Gay, Inc?

0

Trying to get yesterday’s National out on time, I skimmed over this paragraph in yesterday’s DC Agenda story on the supposed death of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act:

“Opposition to the gender identity provision, included to help protect transgender people, is among the contributing factors that’s prevented supporters from lining up the needed 60 votes to break a filibuster, one of the sources said.”

Jillian Weiss at the Bilerico Project questions the motives of Lou Chibbaro’s anonymous sources deep inside Gay, Inc., asking if they were trying to let Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid off the hook (Weiss says the bill needed five more votes in the Senate, all of them Democrats). Either through their own transphobia or a desire to “not rock the boat” now that midterm elections are near and both a Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell repeal and domestic partner benefits for federal employees are in the offing, Weiss suggests that the sources were using Chibbaro to build support for abandoning ENDA.

Elsewhere…

D.C. – The Pentagon will be stalling on a DADT repeal for as long as they can, even if preliminary details will be released next week. This may be due to opposition from top military brass, but that’s not what they were showing when they didn’t applaud the President Obama’s announcement during the State of the Union speech last night, according to one of Andrew Sullivan’s readers – they were merely keeping out of a domestic policy dispute, per tradition. California – So Joy Behar was right, at least when it comes to gay couples in San Francisco – 50% of gay couples in the study were non-monogamous, and happy about it! (The Advocate)

California – Maggie Gallagher: We would have won the Prop 8 trial if it weren’t for you violent homofascists, and that stupid dog! (Joe.My.God)

California – GLAAD’s got an open letter to the organizers of the Grammy Awards, asking them to use Sunday’s awards ceremony to denounce Grammy nominee Buju Banton and the “murder music” for which he was nominated. (Towleroad)

Florida – President Obama gets asked about LGBT rights at a town hall in Tampa, and lauds the federal domestic partner benefits bill currently before Congress as his big contribution to marriage equality. Maybe Obama should talk to the widower of a gay Missouri state trooper. (Towleroad)
