Northland Lutherans reject anti-gay marriage amendment

0

The Northeast Minnesota synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America passed a resolution on Saturday to oppose the anti-gay marriage amendment that will be on the Minnesota ballot in November. It became the second of six synods in Minnesota to oppose the amendment. About one in four Minnesotans are Lutherans.

The resolution read in part, “legislation or public policies that would prevent same-gender couples and their families from pursuing ordinary legislative or legal means to gain the support and protections afforded to all others.”

The Minneapolis synod passed a similar resolution in February.

Minnesotans United for All Families, the coalition working to defeat the amendment said, “The momentum is building in faith communities all across Minnesota. This vote by the Northeastern Minnesota Synod of the ELCA marks the second time that a major body of Lutherans has taken a public stance on this amendment. We are overjoyed by the action of this synod assembly, which adds to our growing grassroots movement to stop this amendment. Minnesotans of all faiths, backgrounds and creeds stand united in knowing that marriage is about love, commitment and responsibility, bettering our community, and raising a family and sharing a life together. This vote illustrates that Minnesotans know it is not up to them to judge how someone else finds happiness. Minnesotans will continue to unite to defeat this hurtful amendment.”
