New poll shows dead heat for anti-gay marriage amendment

A new poll released by Public Policy Polling (PDF) on Wednesday shows that the vote on the anti-gay marriage amendment would be very close if it were held today. 48 percent of Minnesotans say they will vote for it, 47 percent say they will vote against it, and 5 percent are not sure. Interestingly, zero percent said they would not vote on the amendment, which would be counted as a “no” vote.

Two previous PPP polls have found somewhat similar results. In January, the poll found that split to be 48/44 in support and in June that was flipped with 49/43 against.

Opposition to the amendment is highest among women who oppose it 52 to 42 percent, DFLers who oppose it 78 to 16 percent, and people under 45 who oppose it 50 to 45 percent. The amendment sees it’s greatest strengths among men (55 percent support), Republicans (80 percent support), and senior citizens (53 percent).

Independents also support the amendment 51 to 42 percent.

“It looks like Minnesota’s marriage amendment will go down to the wire,” Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling, said in the poll release. “Voters in the state are very closely divided
in their attitudes about it.”
