Minnesota’s ‘War Poets’ debut gay marriage video

Twin Cities band War Poets released a video for their single “Close Enough” and the timing couldn’t be better. The video features two same-sex couples and their journey to getting married.

“These couples are in love, just like people in other relationships,” said War Poets front man and songwriter Rex Haberman, who co-wrote the track with Grammy winning producer Kevin Bowe (Paul Westerberg, Meat Puppets, Jonny Lang) in a statement released by the band. “They want to get married. It’s a portrayal of what they go through to make that happen.”

It was directed by by Toni Trussoni and produced by Chris Bueckers. The video wasn’t without its challenges.

“This is the first time that I have worked on a project with gay couples as the focal point,” Bueckers explains. “It was a challenge. Some people would not work on the project because of the subject matter, and I was a little taken aback by that. The film community is usually very open and progressive about the topic of gay rights.”

The video is set in New York City and reflects on the Stonewall riots up until the present day (gay marriage was legalized in New York last year). But Twin Citians will recognize much of the scenery, as the video was shot largely in Minneapolis and St. Paul.

You can catch the War Poets Saturday night at the Minnesota Music Club.
