Minnesota Public Radio reports that Anoka-Hennepin School District Superintendent Dennis Carlson recently left a voicemail on staff members’ answering machines claiming that “[b]ased on all of the information we’ve been able to gather, none of the suicides were connected to bullying or harassment.”
The district did not complete a formal investigation to back up their claim, according to MPR.
In an interview with MPR, and in previous interviews with TheColu.mn, the mother of one suicide says the district’s claims don’t hold water in her son’s case, who committed suicide at the beginning of this summer. Tammy Aaberg, mother of former Anoka-Hennepin student Justin Aaberg, said she has gathered enough information from her son’s friends to support her repeated allegations that Aaberg was bullied to death.
Research by the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network shows that LGBT teens are much more likely than their straight peers to face bullying and harassment, and other research suggests that as many as one-third of all LGBT teens have tried to commit suicide.
The Anoka-Hennepin Gay Equity Team, an organization of parents and teachers in the school district pushing for more LGBT-specific supports in the schools, did not return requests for comment.
