It’s not often a non-profit’s dirty laundry gets aired in the light of day.
Thursday morning, an anonymous person or group of people calling themselves “concerned members of and allies to the Twin Cities queer community” emailed an open letter to dozens of prominent members of that same community, and posted the text on twincities.indymedia.org, calling for the resignation of Curt Prins, Executive Director of District 202, a Minneapolis-based non-profit that formerly operated a drop-in center for LGBTQA youth, and has in recent years struggled to refashion themselves as an online community for LGBTQA youth across the state. Prins’ critics attack him for violating the organization’s bylaws, for lacking the qualifications for his position, for disempowering LGBTQA youth, and for not holding himself accountable to the community.
The letter seems to have struck a chord with some District 202 alumni, but it remains to be seen what impact it will have. Neither Prins nor the letter’s authors have been immediately willing to discuss the letter’s contents, so it could remain a flash in the dark.
But the letter’s authors did create a petition late Thursday evening that had already gathered nearly 40 names of people who have publicly committed to the contents of the letter.
