Deputy Press Secretary Paul Guequierre of the National Office for the Human Rights Campaign has released the following statement concerning Target Corporation’s Donation to Minnesota Forward.
Target has worked hard to create a fair and equitable workplace for its LGBT employees, and should be proud of its leadership in this area. It is for this reason that HRC is very disappointed in Target’s significant monetary contribution to Minnesota Forward, a group supporting the most clearly anti-LGBT candidate for Governor in Minnesota. We have reached out to Target to express our concern over this contribution. While political contributions to support candidates are not a factor in HRC Foundation’s Corporate Equality Index, HRC finds it puzzling that Target would take great steps to support LGBT inclusiveness while simultaneously helping a candidate who shamelessly rejects equality for LGBT Minnesotans.
The news about Target’s donation has become national news to the LGBT Community. LGBT Blog news sources such as Towleroad reported the story after it appeared in San Fancisco’s SFist. Diaries have been written in the Minnesota Progressive Project; and Pam’s House Blend.
As the news gets the attention of LGBT people and our supporters nation wide so is the disappointment in their decision. A group page on Facebook calling for a boycott of Target was started yesterday with close to 100 members already signed up to do their part.
If Target will not apologize or retract their decision, perhaps a loss of profits to spend such money in the future could result in their thinking twice before doing it again.
