Marry Me Minnesota, a group that has filed suit to overturn Minnesota’s statutory ban on same-sex marriage is calling on Minnesota Attorney General Lori Swanson to allow legal same-sex marriage performed in other states to be recognized in Minnesota. On Thursday a federal judge ruled that the federal Defense of Marriage Act was unconstitutional on two counts.
Here’s the press release from Marry Me Minnesota:
MARRY ME MINNESOTA CALLS ON ATTORNEY GENERAL TO HEED FEDERAL RULING ON “DOMA”
Marry Me Minnesota demands that Lori Swanson, Minnesota’s attorney general exercise the authority vested in her office to immediately rule that same-sex marriages legally performed in other states and countries are legally recognized in Minnesota. On Thursday, a Republican-appointed federal judge in Boston invalidated the 14 year old federal”DOMA” law that has singled out same-sex couples for disparate treatment, calling it “irrational” and a violation of the core constitutional principles of equal protection. This ruling knocks the legs out from under every state-level “DOMA” law in the country, especially in Minnesota, where the constitutional provisions for equal protection of the laws are even stronger than those in the federal constitution.
In light of the federal ruling and the now crumbling house of cards created by furtive campaigns to preserve unjustified marriage privileges though exclusionary marriage laws, Marry Me Minnesota further calls on Attorney General Swanson to withdraw her motion for dismissal in Minnesota’s marriage equality case, Benson v Alverson, and refuse to defend Minnesota’s unconstitutional marriage laws so the 9000 plus gay and lesbian couples in Minnesota can live their lives and raise their families in the environment of equality guaranteed them by our state and federal constitutions.
Marry Me Minnesota is a non-profit organization founded in 2008 by a group of same-sex couples organizing a legal challenge to Minnesota’s discriminatory marriage laws that prevent same-sex couples from accessing government-sanctioned marriage. The group filed suit in Hennepin County District Court on May 11, 2010 and is seeking financial support for the case. Contributions can be made at http://marrymeminnesota.org.
