The National: Two Wounded, One Dead In San Francisco Pride Shooting

0

An apparent personal dispute between two party-goers turned violent on Saturday night in San Fransisco’s storied Castro District, leaving one dead and two injured in a shooting that police are emphatically calling “not a hate crime.” 19-year-old Stephen Powell, a former high school basketball star, was shot four times in the chest by another, unnamed, 19-year-old man at the corner of Market and Castro streets, in the middle of the yearly “Pink Party” organized by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. After shots were fired, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, some in the crowd scattered and others started pelting the shooter with bottles before police calmed the situation and arrested the second 19-year-old. Powell was pronounced dead at a San Francisco hospital following the attack. Two bystanders were also hit by stray shots in the legs and both are expected to recover.
