WCCO reports that a second man is accusing Daniel James Rick of knowingly exposing him HIV. Rick was arrested by the Minneapolis Police on February 19th on charges that he raped a passed-out man on February 5th, in that man’s apartment after meeting the him at the Saloon earlier that night.

Robert O’Riley contacted WCCO after seeing a news story about Rick’s arrest. Last October, O’Riley and Rick met online, where Rick was using the alias “D.J. Smith.” The two had unprotected sex after exchanging several emails, and O’Riley was diagnosed with HIV a few months later after coming down with a bad fever. According to HIV-resource website, The Body, that is consistent with an acute HIV infection.

According to WCCO, quoting MPD police spokesman Sgt. Bill Palmer, Minneapolis police are looking O’Riley’s case, as well as the two cases Rick is currently charged with: the Saloon rape, and a separate case where a 15-year-old boy in Sherburne County snuck out of his parents’ house to hook up with him.

“Mr. Rick has kind of a pattern of behavior in which he uses websites and local establishments in the downtown area to pick up sexual partners. He also has a habit of not informing the sexual partners of his HIV status,” said Minneapolis Police Sgt. William Palmer.

Rick is charged with one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, one count of third-degree assault – including knowingly transferring a communicable disease – and one count of criminal sexual conduct with a minor. Police urge anyone who thinks they are a victim of Rick’s to contact MPD’s Sex Crimes Unit at 612-673-3081.
