The National: Day 2 of Prop 8 Trial – Are Prop 8 Forces Planning to Loose?

0

Last week, the National Organization for Marriage told supporters in an email that they didn’t expect to win this round of the Prop 8 trial, currently underway in San Francisco, but they hoped “with God’s help, at least five members of the current Supreme Court will have the courage to defend our Constitution from this grave attack.”

Given the mountains of sure-to-be-emotional testimony assembled by the plaintiffs, this expectation is not so surprising. By the looks of their chief lawyers’ performances yesterday and this morning, you get to thinking they weren’t kidding about that “act of God” bit.

“One defense attorney seems to feel that just by raising his voice and punctuating certain words, he’s making some important point. It escapes most of us. Some say he’s just winding up; others are shaking their heads and wondering where he’s headed with this.”

and

“Defense attorney David Thompson later tried to undermine [plaintiff’s witness Harvard University professor Nancy] Cott’s credibility at every turn, trying to suggest that she supported polygamy because she donated to an upstart marriage alternative organization at some point — though it turns out she might have donated because the young founders were friends….But after all the long and pointed questioning, Thompson just stopped. No more questions, your honor. We all just scratched our heads…”

D.C. – A repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is in the works, but Speaker Pelosi has delegated the job of pressuring Dem congressmembers to Rep. Patrick Murphy, who’s been championing a DADT repeal for some time. Rep. Barney Frank thinks there are enough votes to pass such a measure in the House, but not necessarily in the Senate, and either way, a repeal isn’t contingent on support from the military, which had previously been a big worry for repeal advocates. D.C. – ENDA is, as usual, in danger of being ended. Like a DADT repeal, the bottleneck is in the Senate, and the White House does not seem to be making the issue a priority. (The Bilerico Project)

Maine, Florida – Neither violent assault nor live ammunition are ok in relationships. (The Advocate)

Uganda – President Yoweri Museveni has declared the “Kill Gays” bill a “foreign policy issue” due to pressure from the US and other donor nations, staking out a claim that his government has a strong interest in seeing the bill watered down or voted down. State-owned media is being cautious, though, and not covering the implications of Museveni’s remarks, illustrating how many Ugandans see foreign pressure as “colonialism” and/or follow murderous religious leaders.
