Minneapolis’ City Council Protests Ugandan Legislation

by James Sanna December 18, 2009 blog, News No Comments

Minneapolis logoTaking a brave stand against the forces of homophobia, Minneapolis’ City Council passed a resolution condemning the “Kill Gays” bill currently before the Ugandan parliament. We’ve covered the bill rather extensively in just about every national news brief in the last few weeks (along with most of the big gay blogs), but it basically would criminalize homosexuality, advocacy in support of LGB Ugandans (possibly including some AIDS-related social and healthcare work), failure to report homosexual activity to police, and would mandate the death penalty for having sex with someone under the age of eighteen, for anyone who is gay and has had sexual relations with multiple partners, and for anyone who is gay and HIV-positive. The proposed legislation also mandates HIV testing for anyone accused of being gay.

Since the city councilors we called were out of the office (and had probably gone home for the weekend), there’s no word yet on whether or not there will be any impact on Minneapolis’ relationship with its Ugandan sister city, Kampala. (h/t National Center for Lesbian Rights)
