MN radio hosts: Supreme Court vote in favor of marriage equality could bring about anti-Christ

A pair of conservative Christian radio hosts took to the airwaves on Monday afternoon warning that if the U.S. Supreme Court rules in favor of same-sex marriage, it could usher in the anti-Christ and could force churches to close. Paul Ridgeway, host of On the Way with Ridgeway on AM 980 KKMS, and Jan Markell, host of Understanding the Times originating on KKMS and syndicated on more than 550 radio stations across the country, were having a discussion about evangelist Tony Campolo.

Last week, Campolo came out in support of marriage equality and the inclusion of same-sex couples in the Christian church. In a statement, Campolo said:

I have come to know so many gay Christian couples whose relationships work in much the same way as our own. Our friendships with these couples have helped me understand how important it is for the exclusion and disapproval of their unions by the Christian community to end. We in the Church should actively support such families. Furthermore, we should be doing all we can to reach, comfort and include all those precious children of God who have been wrongly led to believe that they are mistakes or just not good enough for God, simply because they are not straight.

Campolo’s support for marriage equality has riled conservative evangelicals, including Ridgeway and Markell who spent much of Monday afternoon’s program discussing the issue.

Ridgeway asked Markell what would happen if marriage equality became the law of the land. Her answer: It would be the “final nail in the coffin of America.”

Ridgeway: Jan, what happens if the Supreme Court rules against marriage and says that marriage is… can be and is legally men and men and women and women. What do Christians do then? Do we do civil disobedience? ‘Cause that’s my plan.

Markell: I think they will because we are back at the days of Noah, so yes, I think they will vote that way. I think it will be what is it? 6 to 3? Something like that. Maybe, I guess, 5 to 4? I think staunch conservatives will stick with traditional marriage. I think it’ll be the final nail in the coffin of America.

Markell then went on to engage in popular conspiracy theories espoused by anti-government movements and how it all will lead to the anti-Christ:

Markell: And, again, that had to happen. I hate to sound like gloom and doom but global government had to happen. We’ve even had the Bilderbergers meeting all last week, and that’s a global government outfit. Global government is on the horizon. Barack Obama has contributed to it in a significant way. Hillary Clinton will contribute to it in a significant way. Its setting the stage for the anti-Christ and we are so late in the panoply of things and I believe he is waiting in the wings. So these things had to happen and it’s still tough to watch, but i do think the global government is what’s on the horizon, you know. For that to happen America had to seriously decline.

Ridgeway: You know Jan? That’s what really concerns me and I’ve been in prayer and thought and sent some things out — I think you got a copy. I am prophetically hearing bad things around the world about this fall in america that the judgement is coming but also I interviewed Dr. David Jeremiah and Dr. Kenton Beshore last week. They all say we are the last generation we are going to see the return of Jesus. I don’t think there is any question about that all the signs are pointing to that there are some bad things going to happen before even the rapture happens and even if the rapture happens before the seven years. Folks, I’m convinced that something very difficult is coming upon us this fall and judgment is going to start and it’s very sobering. Is it just me hearing it from anybody or is it just me hearing it from people?

Markell then rattled off a list of what she says could be signs of the doom this fall: the Shemitah, the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the push for a Palestinian state, the blood moon, and Jade Helm.

Ridgeway and Markell then made the assertion that marriage equality would lead to attacks on Christians, the churches would be forced to close, and that it was because of the “wreckage of liberalism.”

Ridgeway: I interviewed recently Dr. David Jeremiah who said no question we are in the last generation and Jesus is coming. Dr. Beshore, you know, Franklin Graham, everybody is saying that. And they’re not just saying it because they are just pulling it out of the air, and the signs are indicating that, and I… they never thought — Jan and I hear this from a lot of people and they say this too — they ever thought evil could rise so quickly. And as you just said, not just Jews but Christians in America are being marginalized. We are being attacked all the time.

Markell: Yeah and that could even get worse with the Supreme Court decision here any day. We could be run out of business, churches could be closed down if, you know, they don’t do the gay marriages and things like that. So we are, I think, we are on the verge of things that I think most people alive right now never thought they would live to see. I mean wouldn’t that be true of yourself Paul?

Ridgeway: Oh absolutely. In fact my mentor many years ago, Dick Enroth, before he went to be with the lord said, ‘Paul you will see where Isaiah said, good will be evil and evil will be good, and we are there. Transgender, abortion, gay marriage — those of us who oppose it… that’s why I am so discouraged by the Tony Campolos of the world. They are going to be held accountable. Gary Borgendale said something very interesting: ‘You lead a child against god, you are going to be held accountable,’ and I can see these young vulnerable 12, 14 year old kids and teenagers who are having sexual identity issues and saying, ‘Hey Tony Campolo said it’s okay to go be married to a gay, man to a man woman to woman. it’s okay.’ Well, it’s not okay. It’s a sin.

Markell: Well, some of this is the wreckage of liberalism. I hate to say it, but it’s the wreckage of a particular political party of which Tony Campolo is a proud leader. He was one of Bill Clinton’s advisors. This is what liberalism preys upon and it’s what it promotes and it’s again why I have such a trouble with Christians who want to be proud liberals. I say it’s not possible. You’re not saying that Paul. I’m saying that. I’ll take the hits for that, I just maintain it’s impossible to be a staunch Christian and a liberal.

  1. I worry about folks in states where marriage equality may be granted by SCOTUS. Their neighbors have not had the benefit of the respectful conversations we had in Minnesota. I fear for the safety of LGBTpeople . I hope I am wrong

  2. Paul Ridgeway, have you ever thought that the AntiChrist is not one being, yet a Group of same thought people as yourself. I do not see the Christ in your judgemental anti Love Christianity that your group seems (HELL BENT) to put into practice. Look into a mirror and ask the reflection, What part of this am I?? God, the final Judge, and not Humans who think they are. Christ, who accepted all with Love and, without judgement. Please re-think your thoughts.
