dykesdodrag2014rgb

Produced by Heather Spear, The Gentleman King
“Dykes Do Drag” – the title says a mouthful but not all there is to say.
Dykes Do Drag are queers of all genders and orientations, celebrating an expanding continuum of gender expression and performance in the Upper Midwest for 15 years. This edgy performance art cabaret features the Twin Cities best as well as newcomers in traditional Drag, burlesque, live music, boi-lesque, modern dance, video and visual art, and lip synching in enticing and exciting hilarity.
A few more bombastic terms to describe DDD include but are not limited to: sexy, radical, entertaining, titillating, kinky and weird. We perform 5 times a year at the Bryant-Lake Bowl!

sciencefriction

ONE NIGHT ONLY! Exploring space travel, dys/utopian futures, and the creative potential of science fiction to show us what we might become. (Still from Campground 1945, Wayne Nelson)

FEATURING:
Wayne Nelsen – retro-futuristic animation films
Gabriela Santiago – internet-age fangirl storytelling
Harisen Daiko – nerded-out drum performance
Nikolas Martell – Trekkie spoken word
Zakary Morton – musical theater in space!
Delilah Lightful – post-apocalyptic-utopia space drag

Curated and hosted by Scott Artley, Patrick’s Cabaret Performing Arts Curator

THE SCIENCE FRICTION CABARET
Patrick’s Cabaret brings together six acts for a one-night performance event exploring space travel, dys/utopian futures, and the creative potential of science fiction to show us what we might become.

Celebrating the eclectic Cabaret format, each artist delivers an exciting and unique take on the event theme. Filmmaker Wayne Nelsen presents two short animated films filled with vintage imagery from mid-20th century campy science fiction. Gabriela Santiago and Nikolas Martell use language to explore the limits and opportunities of science fiction as a genre. Harisen Daiko presents a 12-person choreographed musical performance using traditional taiko drums, while Anna S. Kunin premieres a short new avant-garde theatrical piece using masks and costumes called “The Last Human.” Drag performer Delilah Lightful honors the music of legendary women of color with two performances, including one starring trans* back-up dancers.

The Science Friction Cabaret is part of a new series of Concept Cabarets featuring acts around a common theme. Check out the Performers page at patrickscabaret.org to learn about upcoming events and how to get involved.

PERFORMER BIOS:

Wayne Nelsen
Wayne Nelsen’s animated poetry films are a one-dimensional, paper doll theater that most often features the electronic or acoustic music of Bill Reichelt. His work has won Best in Category at the Co-Kisser Poetry Film Festival, sponsored by MCAD, and has appeared in Altered Scales and at the Flux Show at Patrick’s Cabaret.

Gabriela Santiago
Gabriela Santiago is a writer, storyteller, and frequent reblogger of things sci-fi, fantasy, and fannish. She has performed her ghost story “Children of Air” and her lecture/one-woman show/thingamabob “The Three Bisexual Women You Meet in Fiction (Who Are All Actually the Same Person)” at Patrick’s Cabaret and with Cheap Theatre. Her short play “The Apocalypse as Brought About by Vincent D’Onofrio Fangirls (The Musical)” was selected to be part of the Urban Spectrum Theatre Company’s play-reading series. She is a proud graduate of the Clarion 2013 writing workshop and a member of Team Tiny Bonesaw.

Harisen Daiko
Harisen Daiko are an informal collection of percussion enthusiasts pursuing the elusive fusion of music and geekery. We are fans of Japanese Kumi-daiko (group drumming). We are also students and performers, but what we really share is a love of the sound, motion and community that taiko drums seem to attract and generate.

Nikolas Martell
Nikolas Martell is a professional spoken word artist, actor, writer, photographer, and emcee based out of Minneapolis, MN. He is a national slam poetry champion, spoken word coach, and co-founder and co-host of OUTspoken! Presents. His work focuses on issues of queer identity and mental health.

Zakary Morton
A recent transplant to Minneapolis, Zakary is excited to be making his Patrick’s Cabaret debut. In the short time he has been in the twin cities, Zakary has appeared in two original musicals Dreamboys and Self, Fulfilling Prophecy, both of which were a part of the 2014 Minnesota Fringe Festival. He will be touring this Fall with National Theatre for Children, and is excited to pursue more of the amazing performance opportunities that the Twin Cities have to offer.

Delilah Lightful
Delilah Lightful is the current, eternal, and only Rainbow Spirit Woman. While performing, her aim is to channel the energy of the divine feminine through honoring the music of legendary women of color. She loves to experience the beauty of lakes, mountains, and meadows.

Earlier this year, she acted in Twin Cities 20% Theatre’s play “The Naked I: Insides Out.”

Through living in multiple genders and cultures, she has been given a unique perspective through which to create art. This is what it means to her to be on the “edge of culture”, that we uncover our true humanity once we see the 3D hologram for what it is.
