In philosophy, systems theory, science, and art, emergence is the way complex systems and patterns arise out of a multiplicity of relatively simple interactions. Emerging from the gaping maw of a long winter, these eclectic performances engage audiences in disparate but subtly related ways, coaxing spring into reality.

The core programming at Patrick’s Cabaret consists of our Open Call Cabarets, each show generally consisting of six acts with a mix of experience levels and artistic disciplines. Each Cabaret is carefully curated to offer a diverse range of performances, while at the same time striving to maintain accessibility for the artists we target with our outreach. We put it all on stage – video, dance, performance art, comedy, spoken word – you name it, it happens here!

Lynn O’Brien is a self-taught singer/songwriter and instrumentalist (piano, guitar, baritone & tenor ukulele, flute, loop pedal) and board-certified Music Therapist at a hospital in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. She has 3 original albums under her belt, always with a new creative project up her sleeve. Her uniquely powerful, pure voice and thoughtfully composed songs on a variety of acoustic instruments illustrate joy, sorrow, playfulness, and presence. Lynn’s music seems to transform each audience into a peaceful family, and each stage into an intimate living room. http://www.lynnobrienmusic.com

A professional vocal coach, singer/songwriter and keynote speaker, Barbara McAfee blends practical content, sassy music, useful wisdom, and sophisticated humor in her keynote presentations. She has released six CDs of her music. She was “the band” for a 15-city Women’s Leadership Revival Tour with leadership author and speaker Margaret Wheatley and wrote the theme song as well. Barbara also appears regularly with author Peter Block who wrote the forward to her book. Barbara is the founder of the Morning Star Singers, a group of volunteers who bring songs of comfort and healing to people in hospitals, hospices, and nursing homes. http://www.barbaramcafee.com

Connection, commitment, and community. Barbara Meyer’s deep, soulful, yet highly accessible lyrics create these things, and so much more. Drawing on her playful humor and intrinsic spirituality, Barbara pens songs that are totally relevant now as well as steeped in ancient wisdoms. The Barbara Meyer Band performs them regularly around the Twin Cities and beyond. http://barbarameyermusic.net

[sws_yellow_box box_size=”100″] Julie Dafydd in Soderville: Excavation of a Life [/sws_yellow_box]

Theater program presents Soderville: Excavation of a Life from April 17-19
Saint Paul, Minn.—Metropolitan State University student Julie Dafydd will perform her original one woman show Soderville: Excavation of a Life one weekend only – April 17, 18 and 19 at 7 p.m. This very personal journey of a transgender Metropolitan State student will take place at the Stagedoor Theater on the Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC)/Metropolitan State campus located in the Whitney Fine Arts Center at 1424 Yale Place, Minneapolis.
Soderville was written for the stage by director, Scott M. Rubsam. Rubsam spent hours with Dafydd, taping her recollections and memories before shaping them into a full-length dramatic evening.
The play begins with a woman deciding to take a trip to her hometown in search of her past. What she hopes to find is her family – a family she hasn’t spoken to in 40 years – and whatever remains in a town almost buried by the present. Her childhood home is now a real estate office, and family and friends seem nowhere to be found.
Set in her kitchen as she makes a “feel good” soup, Dafydd recounts stories of her past – mother, father, grandmother, siblings and the friends she grew up with in Soderville, Minn., in the 50s and 60s. She speaks of the good times, the bad times and the indescribable horror and occasional fear of being born in the wrong body. There are no role models, obvious solutions or clear choices. Sexual reassignment surgery ultimately brings happiness, contentment and a new life to a proud survivor. The play is both dramatic and laugh-out-loud funny.
“It isn’t a question of being born in the wrong body. The body isn’t wrong. The world’s interpretation of the body is. It is a process. A transgendered person goes through a process of self-discovery and that is the honest journey. This very personal journey and authentic testimony are woven together as we witness hard choices and a transgender life well lived,” said Dafydd.
Soderville is produced by Theater Underground and Metropolitan State University’s Theater Program with support from Student Activities Funding. Students are free with ID. Single ticket general admission is $10. To reserve, call 612-659-7222. Persons with disabilities who need reasonable accommodation to participate in this event should call Disability Services at 651-793-1549 or 651-772-7687 (TTY).
Metropolitan State University, a member of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system, is America’s premier university for lifelong learning, providing unsurpassed, competitive academic and professional degree programs at the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels while maintaining affordability. Metropolitan State offers the final two years of a theater major for transferring students from MCTC and other Minnesota community colleges. For information on the theater program, contact Gail Smogard, professor and program director, at 612-659-7156.
