Sens. Al Franken and Amy Klobuchar are among 37 U.S. Senators signing on to a letter on Valentine’s Day requesting that President Obama sign an executive order barring discrimination based on Sexual orientation and gender identity among federal contractors.

“We write as supporters ofthe Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) to ask that you issue an Executive Order to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity by federal contractors,” the letter states (PDF). “We are committed to enacting legislation to protect all Americans. In the meantime, you are in a position to protect millions of American workers immediately by including sexual orientation and gender identity alongside long-standing antidiscrimination protections.”

The letter notes that some of the top companies contracted by the federal government already have nondiscrimination policies and that an executive order already exists with regard to race, color, religion, sex and national origin.

“Issuing an Executive Order that includes sexual orientation and gender identity is a critical step that you can take today toward ending discrimination in the workplace,” the Senators wrote.
