Anti-gay marriage amendment supporters raise $1.4 million

Minnesota for Marriage, a coalition supporting the amendment to ban same-sex marriage in Minnesota, reported raising $1.4 million towards the amendment fight. That’s about a third less than opponents of the amendment.

Minnesota for Marriage is made up of the Minnesota Family Council, the Minnesota Catholic Conference and the National Organization for Marriage.

“We are thankful for the strong support of the people of Minnesota in our effort to preserve marriage as the union between one man and one woman in our State Constitution,” John Helmberger, Minnesota for Marriage Chairman, said in a statement. “Our opponents are raising money from same sex marriage activists across the country, and although we have always expected that they will outspend us, as marriage protection opponents have in every other state dealing with this issue, we are confident that the people of Minnesota will come together to raise the resources necessary to win and not let our state’s definition of marriage be defined by activist judges or liberal out of state organizations. We don’t have to match our opponents spending; we only need to mobilize people who believe marriage should be protected. We have the people of Minnesota on our side, and we remain confident of victory.”

Opponents of the amendment have raised three times as much money. On Tuesday, Minnesotans United for All Families reported that it raised $4.1 million. Contrary to Helmberger’s statement, Minnesotans United noted that 91 percent of individual donations since January have come from within Minnesota.

In addition, Minnesotans United released their full financial disclosure report to the press. Minnesota for Marriage has not yet done so.
