The city of Golden Valley voted to support a resolution Tuesday night that opposes the anti-gay marriage amendment that will be on the Minnesota ballot in 2012. The vote was 4 ayes, zero nays and one abstention. Golden Valley will become the 7th Minnesota city to reject the amendment.
The resolution says, “the proposed amendment would be contrary to the purpose of our State Constitution to protect the rights, privileges and freedom of conscience of all citizens by withholding from some individuals and families important legal rights and obligations.”
The Minnesota Log Cabin Republicans played a part in getting the measure passed. It sent a letter, cited by the mayor, in support of the resolution. It read in part, “As conservatives we advocate for individual responsibility and freedom and a smaller government, which allows for people to make their own personal choices and maintain more control over their own lives.”
Golden Valley joins Duluth, Minneapolis, Saint Paul, St. Louis Park, Edina and Falcon Heights in voting to oppose the marriage amendment.
Minnesotans United for All Families praised the vote:
“We applaud the Golden Valley City Council members for taking a stand against limiting the freedom to marry for thousands of committed couples and their families in the State of Minnesota. The momentum to defeat this amendment has never been stronger, as Minnesotans far and wide recognize that this amendment solves no problem, protects no family or marriage, and only represents an unacceptable amount of government intrusion into the personal lives of Minnesota families. We are proud to add Golden Valley to the growing list of cities that oppose this amendment, working together with the more than 325 coalition members who are committed to defeating the amendment. These partners are refusing to sit idly by while some try to amend our state constitution to limit the freedom of certain Minnesotans and impose a one-size-fits-all government definition of marriage on all of us.”
