The teachers union at Minnesota’s largest school district voted on Monday night to oppose the “controversial topics policy,” a policy put forward to replace the district’s “neutrality policy” that limits discussions of LGBT issues in the district’s schools. The new controversial topics policy is confusing, teachers say, and could continue discrimination against LGBT students.

The 2,800 teacher union voted to oppose the policy on Monday night.

Julie Blaha, head of the teachers union, explained the union’s concerns in an interview with the Star Tribune.

“We need to be clear that our students’ identities won’t be an issue,” she said. “We want them to value who they are. We need to draw the line between issues and identities.”

“Our job is to not tell our students what to think but to think deeply,” she said. However, “we can’t be these robots in the class without any thoughts or personality. There are times when [expressing opinions] makes sense.”
