Stonewall endorses Jeff Anderson for Congress

Stonewall DFL, a LGBT group affiliated with DFL party, announced on Monday that it has endorsed Duluth City Council member Jeff Anderson for the race to unseat Republican Rep. Chip Cravaack. Anderson is one of four DFLers running for the party’s endorsement to take on Cravaack in 2012.

In addition to Anderson, former Michele Bachmann opponent Tarryl Clark, former Sen. Al Franken staffer Daniel Fanning, and former Congressman Rick Nolan are vying for the endorsement. Cravaack bested Rep. James Oberstar in 2010 causing the DFL to lose one of its longest help seats. Oberstar was a strong supporter of LGBT rights; Cravaack is not.

“As a fourth-generation Iron Ranger, veteran, businessman and a public servant Jeff has the knowledge and experience to help lead the Eighth Congressional District and the state of Minnesota through the opportunities and challenges we face,” said David DeGrio, chair of the group. “As a native-son of Duluth, I am proud to support Jeff Anderson because he is the best advocate for policies that will help grow the northland economy and create not just jobs, but also the pathway to 21st Century careers that are badly needed across the Northern Minnesota District.”

In a statement in response to the endorsement, Anderson said, “After thoroughly evaluating all the candidates and campaigns, I am honored and humbled that Stonewall DFL found my campaign to be in the best position to win back the Eighth and advocate for the freedoms of all Americans and the recognition of all families.”
