Weekend Preview Plus – Memorial Day Weekend 2011

Muffins:

Memorial Day weekend is always full of interesting and fun opportunities.  This year is no exception.  I am featuring one item and one on the horizon item this week.  Why?  I am hoping you all have plenty of plans with family and friends already in the schedule.  If you don’t already have plans the best advice I can offer is to get out and go for a walk.  The Twin Cities is a wonderful place (year round) especially in the spring and summer.  It is Memorial Day weekend so the farmer’s markets are open, the bike trails are busy and the sidewalk cafes are in full swing.  Sometimes it is best to just venture forth without a specific plan and see what crosses your path.

Now I hate to be a Debbie Downer but one thing that I would like to highlight in this edition is Safety!  Lately there have been a number of attacks in Minnesota and especially in the metro area and I cannot stress how saddened I am by this!  I want to remind you all to have fun, party down and be accountable to yourself, your friends and your community.  If you see something strange don’t hesitate to call either 311 or 911 depending on the nature of the occurrence.  Let’s all work together to make this the safest Memorial Day weekend the Twin Cities has seen.

I would like to send out positive energy to those affected by the storms last weekend and encourage all of you to take a moment to consider what you can do to assist in the effort to help those affected begin to re-build their lives.

Now – on to the picks!

IML in Chcago

This weekend there are two obvious destinations for our community – Chicago and Home.  Why Chicago?  Well, in case you haven’t heard already it is the weekend that the Windy City boasts International Mr. Leather each year.  This year’s Minnesota contender for the category of International Mr. Boot Black is none other than Bootblack Mike.  If you are able to make the trek to Chi-Town – cheer him on!

Locally, I struggled to narrow all the options down to one and finally decided I would send you over to the 4th annual MIX at Chambers.

Ah, the rooftop: warm air, a

nice breeze, beverage in hand, friends all around, maybe shakin’ just a little to the beat…

That’s MiX. For over four years we’ve been coming together for the best Sunday Funday in town. And Dave Em & D’Amico Kitchen are pleased to welcome you back to Le Meridien Chambers for our annual Memorial Weekend celebration.

As always, we’ll feature happy hour prices all night, some stompin’ music courtesy …of our resident DJ’s SHIEK and PARIS, and the most friendly and drama-free crowd in town. As always, there’s no cover. RSVP now and tell your friends!

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Avoid the drive home and/or make a romantic evening with that special someone, as Le Meridien Chambers offers an unbelievable $119 room rate especially for MiX guests. This rate is good only for the evening of the 29th, and can only be booked by calling the hotel’s front desk at 612-767-6900. Ask for the MiX rate and they’ll hook you up. The rooms are among the swankiest in town — so take advantage of this amazing deal while it’s available!

MiX is a GLBT-oriented event, but we welcome everyone who shares our spirit of fun. We’re also 21+.

This is a benefit to raise money and awareness for The Aliveness Project – Positive Impact Fund. The goal is to raise funds for The Aliveness Project Capital Building Fund.

By bringing together many different facets of the LGBT community, we will produce an entertaining night celebrating the accomplishments of 40 years by Drag Performers of the Twin Cities.

To highlight the endless assistance of these Drag Performers, in raising funds for over 50 different Minnesotan organizations and businesses, a special honorary show will be held. This will include local actors, singers, and cabaret performers. HEADLINER: JACKIE BEAT!

The gathering of 100 honorees will also gather and perform! This will set a Guinness World Record for Most Drag Performers in a Single Performance. An Adjudicator from Guinness World Records will be on hand to validate this event.
