Gay Alexandria teen’s death ruled a suicide

Controversy erupted in Alexandria last month when Lance Lundsten died of an apparent suicide, but details were sketchy. New medial examiner reports reveal that his death was due to suicide and some in the community say the gay teen was bullied at Jefferson High School.

From the Minnesota Independent:

An Alexandria, Minn., teen’s death has been ruled a suicide following conflicting reports about about the cause of death. KSAX reports that Lance Lundsten died on Jan. 17 from a “mixed drug ingestion.” Fellow students have speculated that he was bullied at Jefferson High School over his sexual orientation and have organized the Jefferson Anti-Bully Coalition.

Lundsten’s death prompted several students in the district to speak to local media about their experiences at Jefferson; one, a gay 19-year old recent grad, contemplated suicide after incessant taunts in the school’s hallways and classrooms.

Reports of Lundsten’s suicide led to a spat between KSAX and the Alexandria Echo Press when law enforcement told KSAX one thing and Lundsten’s family told the Echo Press another.

The Jefferson Anti-Bully Coalition renewed calls for people to “keep Lance in your prayers.”
