MN Daily: Why did Obama avoid gay rights at U of MN rally?

The Minnesota Daily editorial board praised President Obama’s appearance at the University of Minnesota on Saturday, but also took time to criticize an important issue that Obama left out: gay rights. LGBT voters have become increasingly disenchanted with Obama and some media outlets predict that will be bad for Democrats next Tuesday.

LGBT issues in Minnesota have certainly become national news with an increase in suicides and anti-LGBT bullying, the GOP’s Tom Emmer and Target donations, and a huge Catholic campaign against gay marriage.

Here’s the Daily’s critique of Obama:

Toward the end of his speech, Obama spoke about the uniqueness of the American experiment and the country’s promise of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. He told a story in which, “Slowly, slaves were freed; slowly, women got the right to vote; slowly, workers got the right to organize.”

These are unquestionably important accomplishments, but this is looking toward the successes of the past. Where in Obama’s speech did he talk about current social issues, especially those confronting the gay community? From gay marriage to “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” to the suicides of perceived gay youth, the challenges faced by the gay community have constantly been in headlines across the country and Minnesota.

Standing in front of young, idealistic students and alongside a gubernatorial candidate who supports gay rights, Obama had a perfect opportunity to show support for the gay community.
