Community forum to focus on HIV and the law

by admin April 28, 2010 blog, Health No Comments

With news of an individual charged with allegedly spreading HIV in the media in recent weeks, the Minnesota AIDS Project is hosting a community forum on Wednesday evening to get information about HIV and the law into the community. Part of the Allan Spear Forums, named after the long-serving, openly-gay legsilator, “Should I ask? Should I Tell?” will include a panel of experts on the legal issues of HIV disclosure.

Minnesotans living with HIV have a responsibility and a need to understand the Minnesota Statutes regarding HIV disclosure and the transmission of a communicable disease. The goal of this Allen Spear Forum is to provide current information from a panel of experts on how this law is interpreted and how a person living with HIV can avoid possible litigation.

The panel will include:
John Bullough, MSW, LICSW Psychotherapist (private practice)

Jerry Burg, Esq Defense Attorney (Heltzer and Burg PLC)
Amy Sweasy, Esq. Hennepin County Attorney (Adult Prosecution Division)
Stephen Schletty, Disease Intervention Unit Manager (Minnesota Department of Health)
Lynn M. Mickelson, Esq. Legal Services Manager (Minnesota AIDS Project)

The forum will be on Wednesday, April 28 from 6:30 to 8:30pm at Plymouth Congregational Church – Jackman Room, 1900 Nicollet Avenue at Franklin in Minneapolis.
