Thursday, Sept. 24, marks the second annual Minneapolis Trans* Equity Summit, the focus of which will be on the criminal justice system. The event, held at Intermedia Arts, will run in conjunction with VisibiliT, “a six-week photography exhibition at the gallery that offers an in-depth look at the lives of Minneapolis’ trans* community.”

The Minneapolis Trans* Equity Summit is held in collaboration with the City of Minneapolis. Last year, Blue Jeans Media produced a short documentary about the summit.

“The Trans* and Gender Non-Conforming community has long been one of the most marginalized, feared and discriminated communities in our society,” event organizers wrote for this year’s summit. “With the SCOTUS ruling of equal marriage for all United States Citizens irrespective of gender, it is clear that we are moving towards a more equitable society. However Trans-identified individuals continue to navigate dangerous and outright hostile territories.”

The summit is free, but attendees are required to register at Event Brite.

Following the summit, which runs from 1-5pm, there will be an Opening Reception for VisibiliT with a participating artists. Refreshments are sponsored by The Third Bird, The Seward Co-Op Creamery, and Lake Wine and Spirits.

Two other events are tied into the summit. On September 26, RARE Productions is co-presenting Cabaret, “an evening of performance celebrating the diverse voices of the Trans* and gender non-conforming community.” That event begins at 7:30pm at Intermedia Arts. Trans: The Movie will be screened on Saturday, October 8 at 7:30pm at Intermedia Arts for its Midwest premiere. Trans: The Movie “provides an intimate journey into the lives of multiple transgender people, shining a light on each individual’s struggles and triumphs.” A community dialogue will be held after the screening.
