St. Paul Public Schools has created a process for students to update their name and gender in district systems to reflect the way a student identifies, the Star Tribune reports. The name and gender information change requests are part of the district’s gender inclusion policy adopted in March.
The name change procedures are part of a broad set of gender inclusive policies in the district’s procedures manual which was updated in mid-August. The form “provides a record of changes to a student’s gender pronoun, access to gender-specific facilities, and participation in gender-specific co/extra-curricular activities.”
Because the State of Minnesota requires school districts to report students’ gender as either male or female, students still have to select one of those options. However, the district has implemented an alternate gender system for district records: “Saint Paul Public Schools offers students and their parent or guardian the option of indicating an alternate gender to be recorded in the district student records system. The gender specified may be outside of the gender binary. For instance, two-spirit, gender queer, or gender fluid may be indicated. Others gender identities may be written-in.”
The gender identification and name change process allows students to participate in school activities based on the gender with which they consistently identify including restroom use, athletics, and extracurricular activities.
According to the Star Tribune, the district has had three requests so far for name changes through the system.
