ellenfringe

By BOOM! Theater; Directed by Patrick Kozicky

Ellen Krug has graciously and bravely allowed us to adapt her auto-biography to the stage. While her book has many layers, story lines and themes (we highly recommend reading it), we recognized a central theme of authenticity and a deeply moving story about self discovery.

Getting to Ellen is an ensemble piece. All three actors play Ellen throughout the show, as well as peripheral characters in Ellen’s life. Our production focuses on Ellen’s struggle to discover who she really is (a transgender woman), while balancing an already complicated life (work, marriage, kids).

At BOOM! Theater, we are passionate about highlighting LGBT stories, and creating an inclusive environment both on and off stage. We strive to remain accessible and relevant to audiences and artists from all walks of life. We believe that everyone has a story to tell, and everyone deserves to be heard.

londonfringe

By Ghoulish Delights, Written by Tim Uren

A madman. A demon. A liar and a broken heart.

In the haunted streets of London, these elements all fall into place to create a truly artistic crime. Some mysteries are born in misery and will never be resolved. But a soul who searches will always find something. And sometimes, by wild coincidence, it finds what it was looking for.

Dixie Treichel and John Townsend spoke to Tristan Miller about Melancholy London as part of Fresh Fruit’s 15th Annual Queer Fringe Binge on KFAI!

Ghoulish Delights returns to the Minnesota Fringe Festival after last year’s successful run of The Tourist Trap with a brand new production! Melancholy London is a darkly romantic tale of lies and the supernatural. Tim Uren loosely adapted the story from Arthur Machen’s “The Inmost Light,” creating a distinctly modern version of the classic tale of terror.

What happens to the children of transgender parents? Probably not what you think. In this heartwarming story, multiple families reinvent themselves, for when parents transition, families transform.

What happens to the children of transgender parents? Probably not what you think.

When a family no longer fits the traditional description of one father, one mother, and 1.8 children, the families must reinvent themselves. This heartwarming story, based on interviews with transgender parents and their spouses, follows three transgender families as they seek their own structure, their own unique arrangements.

In a small town in northern Alabama, Baby Jacob was almost never born. Only Jimmy and Jeanette’s agreement to adopt him prevented his mother from having an abortion. Three years later, when Jimmy can no longer bear to live as a man, Jeanette promises to stay with “Jamie” and Jacob. But not everyone in their Alabama hometown is willing to accept her.

In Indiana, Danielle has been a trucker for twenty years, a parent for twenty-two, but a woman for only ten. When “Daniel” finally tells his wife Catherine about wanting to become a woman, she promises to stay with him. Until her church elders and her divorce lawyer get hold of her.

In a suburb of Atlanta, Lily thinks she has it all–her husband Larry is a vice president of his company, they have a house in an affluent neighborhood, and their two small children are way above average. When Larry decides to become Lori, they buy two townhouses next door to each other. But their plans change when Lily is diagnosed with cancer.

Three families, each with a different story and a different outcome. Not all of them have happy endings.

But, however they differ, they all share one thing: when parents transition, families transform.
