One Voice Mixed Chorus, Minnesota’s LGBTA chorus, will present ‘Eat, Drink, and Be Married” at Hopkins High School on Saturday and Sunday. The event will feature a musical program that takes the audience on a history tour of LGBT Minnesota with song and spoken word.

“In this concert my goal was to really highlight and celebrate the individuals and the organizations that have really made LGBT rights a reality here in Minnesota,” chorus artistic director Jane Ramseyer Miller told The Column. “Near the beginning of the concert we tell the story of the first Pride gathering in Loring Park where 50 people showed up. And we will tell a story of the very first gay cruise and the way that some of our queer businesses have really supported the gay community.”

Ramesayer Miller added, “There will be stories about some of the individuals that really stood up and worked really hard at gay rights. For example, back in the 70s, the very first gay couple in the nation to apply marriage license was a Minneapolis couple, we will tell that story too. Just some of the things that not everybody knows and we want to make sure they do. There’s a really cool history that we want to capture.”

The program will include “light-hearted music about food and drink including John Rutter’s Banquet Fugue, Bittersweet Tango and the hilarious Mashed Potato Love Song.” In addition, “the United States premiere of The Turing Test tells the story of Dr. Alan Turing, and Make Them Hear You offers tribute to those who work for LGBT civil rights.” There will also be a “wedding reception” following the concert complete with wedding cake.

  1. […] One of the other sort of unique ways that I program is rather than just being a concert of just solid music, we often have spoken word or narrative pieces, written pieces that kind of connect the songs and help sort of weave in and out of the music and that’s the case for this concert that’s coming up as well (Be sure to check out OVMC’s upcoming concert “Eat, Drink, and Be Married”) […]
