Pride parade names grand marshals: Rybak and Harteau

Twin cities Pride has named former Minneapolis mayor R.T. Rybak and Minneapolis Police Chief Janée Harteau as pride marshals for the 2014 Ashley Rukes GLBT Pride Parade.

Rybak is seen as a longtime ally of the LGBT community, and performed many of the first same-sex marriages in Minnesota. Harteau is the Minneapolis police force’s first openly LGBT chief in history. Rybak married Harteau and her partner last August.

“R.T. and Janée are integral leaders affecting positive change for equality in Minnesota,” Dot Belstler, Executive Director of Pride, said in a statement announcing the selection. “We are thrilled to have them lead our annual celebration in the Twin Cities.”

Twin Cities Pride also honored several other Twin Cities people and institutions. The Community Champion Award went to Spirit on Lake, a senior LGBT living center. Harvey Zuckman was awarded the Lifetime Champion Award for his role in creating the Minnesota Freedom Band in the 1980s, and his hand in helping start 6 other LGBT bands.

US Bank received the Corporate Champion Award for it’s charitable work around homeless LGBT youth.

The awards were announced at the Pride Art Show last week.
