Man convicted in murder of Chrissy Bates

[by Andy Birkey November 29, 2011 Uncategorized Comments Off

Arnold Waukazo was convicted of second degree murder last week in the stabbing death of Krissy Bates. Bates was a transgender woman living in downtown Minneapolis who was killed in January of this year.

OutFront Minnesota shares some information from the trial:

Waukazo waived his right to a jury trial and Hennepin County District Judge Allen Oleisky presented the verdict today.

Defense counsel had argued to downgrade charges from First Degree, Pre-Meditated Murder to Manslaughter as a result of “heat of passion” and self defense. Waukazo and Bates had been involved in a relationship prior to Bates’ death. The prosecution repeatedly argued that the aggressive and deliberate attack which resulted in Bates’ death at the hands of Waukazo, in fact, the antithesis of self-defense and a passionate response.

“This is cold blooded murder,” states Mike Freeman, Hennepin County Attorney, in his summation. “This was a premeditated planned committed action… he killed her and left her to die.”

According to trial testimony, Bates had recently begun dating Waukazo and told friends that he was “the one.” On the evening of January 6, 2011, after an argument in Bates’ Minneapolis apartment, Waukazo initially strangled Bates to the point of unconsciousness. According to his taped confession, when she moved, he made the deliberate decision to end her life. He reached for a small switchblade on a nearby table and proceeded to stab her multiple times causing significant, fatal injuries. Waukazo left the apartment, leaving her to be found five days later by the apartment manager.

“We know that the person she called the love of her life killed her in a brutal senseless act of transphobic, intimate partner violence,” says OutFront Minnesota Anti-Violence Program Director Rebecca Waggoner. “And we are committed to making sure Krissy is remembered, and that her death will remind us all of the work yet to be done to create a safe community where all are respected and able to be themselves.”

According to OutFront Minnesota executive director Monica Meyer, “Regardless of whether the violence that affects our community comes at the hands of an intimate partner or a total stranger, it’s a reminder that safety is one of the primary concerns of LGBT people Our public policy work is in no small part guided by our commitment to creating a Minnesota where LGBT people are valued members of families and communities where others would not think of compromising their safety.”

Labor Day? I Thought It Was Memorial Day!

While many of us are enjoying the first BBQ and outdoor celebrations of friends and family, others are busy making ready for the upcoming season of alfresco lingering.  I was out for a drive with friends yesterday and we decided to swing by the historic riverfront development known as St. Anthony Main.  We were delighted to see the door ajar at the new location of Wilde Roast Cafe.  The new location will be opening its doors early in June of this year and will no doubt delight patrons both new and old.  While most of America was heading back to the grill for seconds, there was substantial effort put forth to open new doors to the river for a summer of fun.  Owners of the Wilde Roast Cafe, Tom and Dean are busily readying themselves for foot traffic generated by the many summer events held at the historic and popular riverfront destination.  The new location will be able to accommodate the masses as they grow the business from the current 2300 square feet to almost triple that.  The new 6300 square feet will boast a gelato bar with iced delights made right there in the shop.  They will also have a design your own burger bar and eventually a full liquor license.  The new space allows the business to host events and meetings for up to 40 with full AV support.  Beyond that they are now adjacent many additional venues available for staging larger events.

Some of what is familiar to the regulars will still be available with expanded offerings to entice the soon to be new devotees.  As I received my very impromptu and gracious but rare sneak peek I was delighted by the attention to detail.  All of the architectural and design details that made the original space charming and homey have traveled down the road to the riverfront expansion.  One detail is not yet ready to disclose but will absolutely be instantly recognized as the charming detail that welcomes all to come for a visit and stay for awhile.

I am pleased to see one of my favorite businesses thrive and find a perfect new location capable of accommodating their growing family of fans.  Best of luck on a wonderful new location for the Wilde Roast Cafe!

Muffins:

Memorial Day weekend is always full of interesting and fun opportunities.  This year is no exception.  I am featuring one item and one on the horizon item this week.  Why?  I am hoping you all have plenty of plans with family and friends already in the schedule.  If you don’t already have plans the best advice I can offer is to get out and go for a walk.  The Twin Cities is a wonderful place (year round) especially in the spring and summer.  It is Memorial Day weekend so the farmer’s markets are open, the bike trails are busy and the sidewalk cafes are in full swing.  Sometimes it is best to just venture forth without a specific plan and see what crosses your path. … Continue Reading

Twin Cities Pride vs. Minneapolis Park Board, round two

[by admin April 20, 2011 Feature, News, Uncategorized 1 Comment

For the second year, Twin Cities Pride and the Minneapolis Park Board are in a tangle over whether Pride can exclude vendors who espouse anti-LGBT views during the Twin Cities LGBT Pride Festival in Loring Park. Pride wants to establish “free speech zones” in the park for anti-gay protesters, but so far Minneapolis Parks has balked at the idea.

Last year, Twin Cities Pride filed an injunction against anti-gay activist Brian Johnson of Hayward, Wis. In 2009, Johnson was arrested by Park Police after Pride organizers asked them to leave. At the time, Johnson’s wife told local media, “We believe [homosexuality] is a sin.” … Continue Reading

[by Andy Birkey October 24, 2010 Uncategorized Comments Off

Before there was Harvey Milk, there was Allan Spear. Sen. Allan Spear was one of the first openly LGBT politicians in the country having come out in 1974. The University of Minnesota will be hosting a book launch of his autobiography called Crossing the Barriers. Here’s a press release on the event:

Book launch event for Crossing the Barriers: The Autobiography of Allan H. Spear

Perhaps best known for coming out as openly gay during his first term in the Minnesota Senate, Allan Spear had a long and distinguished career as a historian and senator. He passed away in 2008, leaving his memoir slightly incomplete. A stirring afterword by John Milton completes his story, chronicling Spear’s accomplishments as a politician and activist during his final years.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Allan H. Spear was elected to the Minnesota Senate in 1972 and served for twenty-eight years, retiring in 2000. He was president of the Senate from 1993 to 2000. He was one of the first openly gay state legislators in the country, and he fought to amend Minnesota’s Human Rights Act to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation. He was associate professor of history at the University of Minnesota from 1964 to 2000 and author of Black Chicago: The Making of a Negro Ghetto, published in 1967. The Minnesota Historical Society named him one of 150 Minnesotans who shaped the state.

PRAISE FOR CROSSING THE BARRIERS:
“Crossing the Barriers reveals in intimate detail the social, political, and personal evolution of an exceptional man in transformative times. Allan Spear’s autobiography paints a vivid picture of the history he lived…and the history he made. Allan was a devoted son and partner, a gifted teacher, astute politician, skillful legislator, cherished friend and mentor, and a role model for all of us who wish to pursue the career of our dreams and be honest about who we are.”—U.S. Representative Tammy Baldwin

“I join with all Minnesotans who mourn the loss of Allan Spear. His evenhandedness, command of the issues, and ability to reach across the aisle and work with colleagues of both parties were legendary and should inspire us all. He was a man of great courage who served as one of this nation’s first openly gay legislators.”—Senator Barack Obama, October 2008
