Who hasn’t yearned for the ”good old days,” longed for a simpler lifestyle? In Jordan Harrison’s MAPLE AND VINE, a contemporary, professional couple decides to abandon their Manhattan lifestyle, opting for a simpler existence right out the 1950s. They join a cult-like group of people who have recreated 1955’s Eisenhower America somewhere in the Midwest, the SDO– the Society of Dynamic Obsolescence. With a Committee on Authentication to ensure that standards of the time are observed, they confront a whole new set of questions. Can a former high-powered publisher find fulfillment in making crab puffs? How does an interracial couple fit into a neighborhood where people are instructed to uphold the appropriate degree of racism of the period? A gay couple meets clandestinely, but where is their place in this constructed world? And what did we do before we had sushi, hummus, focaccia or “chipotle anything”?
