Minneapolis’ Assistant Chief of Police Sharon Lubinski will be the nation’s first openly gay U.S. Marshal if confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Lubinski, who is lesbian, has more than 30 years of experience in law enforcement.

Obama announced today that he was nominating Lubinski. Sen. Amy Klobuchar entered Lubinski’s name into consideration earlier this summer.

U.S. Marshals are charged with protecting Federal District courthouses. Lubinski will be head of the U.S. Marshal’s for the District Court of Minnesota. She will be the second woman currently serving as one of the 94 United States U.S. Marshals and only the 13th female Marshal in history.

“Assistant Chief Lubinski has dedicated her career to the noble cause of protecting her fellow Americans,” said President Obama in a press statement on Tuesday. “She has displayed exceptional courage in the pursuit of justice, and I am honored to nominate her today to continue her selfless work as a U.S. Marshal for the District of Minnesota.”
