Pres. Obama to Speak at HRC Gala

Like it or not, the Human Rights Campaign is the biggest gay game in D.C., so it would make sense for President Barack Obama to deliver a major speech on LGBT rights and policy at their gala dinner in honor of Judy and Dennis Shepherd, the parents of gay martyr Matthew Shepherd. The Shepherds will be receiving the “Edward M. Kennedy National Leadership Award” named after the late senator from Massachusetts in honor of his long record of LGBT activism.

The HRC had this to say in its press release:

“We are honored to share this night with President Obama, who has
called upon our nation to embrace LGBT people as brothers and
sisters,” said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese. “It is
fitting that he will speak to our community on the night that we pay
tribute to his friend and mentor Senator Edward Kennedy, who knew that
as president, Barack Obama would take on the unfinished business of
this nation – equal rights for the LGBT community, and for every
person who believes in liberty and justice for all.”

The big question is what kind of things Obama will announce — will it be the platitudes and calls for patience America’s LGBT communities have heard for so long, or will he put forward specific promises with timelines for fulfilling them?

So far, the White House has not issued a statement about the dinner, scheduled for Saturday in Washington, D.C.
