The Courage Campaign notes that Sen. Amy Klobuchar is one of two Democrats who have not yet said whether they support a repeal of the federal Defense of Marriage Act. CC’s Adam Bink notes:
“I just got off the phone with the offices of Democratic Sens. Kohl (D-WI) and Klobuchar (D-MN), who are not co-sponsors and told me they have not yet taken a position on the bill itself yet. To my knowledge, no Republicans on the committee have taken a position on this bill, either. So we are two shy.”
Klobuchar has often waited until the last minute on LGBT issues. She took considerable heat for not back a repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell before eventually voting for it. She hadn’t signed on to the Uniting American Families Act which would help binational same-sex couples stay together. And last spring she was missing from a resolution condemning Uganda’s “Kill the Gays” bill.
Her counterpart in the Senate, Sen. Al Franken, has lent his support to all three causes and has also spearheaded legislation to curb anti-gay bullying.
Just heard: Her office announced that Sen. Klobuchar WILL vote for DOMA repeal. Great job, netroots!
