The Edina City Council passed an ordinance on Tuesday creating a domestic partner registry in that city. The move allows same-sex couples to take advantage of family memberships in city services and will allow city employees to take advantage of benefits currently only available to married couples.

“We were not just the fourth city in this state to have a domestic partner ordinance; we’re the first suburb,” Edina Mayor Jim Hovland said in a statement. “So whether we were the first, fiftieth or five-hundredth, take pride in the fact that your community believes in fundamental fairness for all.”

Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Duluth have all passed ordinances to create domestic partner registries.
