Gadfly Theatre to debut “And Then They fell”

The queer and feminist theatre company, Gadfly Theatre Productions, will debut And Then They Fell in mid-march.

And Then They Fell by Tira Palmquist is a look at youth homelessness, sexual abuse, and queer identity as it follows Jordan Matthews tumultuous home life and her unexpected romance with Cal.

Gadlfy Theatre describes the play as “an unflinchingly accurate look at the reality of youth homelessness, sexual abuse, and queer identity, with an unexpected touch of romance and magical realism.”

Cassandra Snow of Gadfly spoke to The Column about the upcoming play.

“So this play actually breaks a few of my rules about what I’ll put on stage (unless it’s a specific historical character) including dead queers on stage and whatnot,” she said. “However, I felt like the topic of youth homelessness was so important and not something we really see a lot about, so I decided to plow ahead.”

Queer youth homelessness is an important but difficult topic for entertainers to tackle, so Gadfly is relying on two organizations to help ensure the play portrays that issue responsibly.

“As we’ve really gotten into the script, we’ve also had input from the Sexual Violence Center and Avenues for Homeless Youth, and the show has really evolved well beyond what even I anticipated the script to be,” said Snow. “This is a show about abusive parental figures, and it’s a show about people living in poverty slipping through the cracks. It’s a show about connection and solace, in spite of the tragedies inherent. But it is very much still a show about homelessness, about how we survive when things get hard, or if we survive at all.”

Snow said that audiences should expect to laugh at times and experience a lot of heartbreak.

“I don’t want to give anything away, but there’s still some rays of hope throughout the show itself,” Snow said.

The cast includes Mindy Vang, Adele Bolier, Troy Stolp, Kjertina Whiting, and Starla Larson.
