windandwater

This concert explores forms of water music, starting with one of the most famous by Handel. Water Music was scored for a larger orchestra to be performed on a barge floating down the Thames River at the behest of King George I. You can almost imagine the baroque sounds wafting in the wind over the waves. Inspired by the same river, Elizabeth Maconchy’s Proud Thames Overture evokes the grandeur of a river once used as the main transportation route for British monarchs. Finally, with a nod to Handel, Libby Larsen puts her own spin on “Water Music” in her Symphony No. 1. Larsen ‘s “quartet of water studies,” allows us to experience many facets of the water through “Fresh Breeze,” “Hot, Still,” “Wafting,” and “Gale.”

Leckie’s debut novel and the first in her “Imperial Radch” space opera trilogy, followed by _Ancillary Sword_ (2014) and _Ancillary Mercy_ (2015). The novel follows Breq, the sole survivor of a starship destroyed by treachery and the vessel of that ship’s artificial consciousness, as she attempts to revenge herself on the ruler of her civilization. _Ancillary Justice_ received critical praise, won the Hugo Award, Nebula Award, BSFA Award, Arthur C. Clarke Award and Locus Award, and was nominated for several other science fiction awards. . . . the “assured, gripping and stylish” novel succeeded both on the large and on the small scale, as the tale of an empire and as a character study . . . . [Wikipedia.com]

After a number of topics that were certainly interesting and often powerful explorations of LGBT issues and fine writing, but which were sometimes hard to obtain or (honestly) not “easy” reading, we have a book universally hailed as “immensely fun” and “conceptually ambitious” and, having won most of the mainstream awards for SF, pretty clearly SF. I’m looking forward to reading it, and I hope we’ll have a great discussion on November 10!

motherpearl

Come one! Come all! To the 3rd installment of Mother Pearl’s Bango to help GLBTQ youth that are facing homelessness.

As always Mother Pearl will be giving her outrageous talent doing a not-so-heavenly Bango. This year we will once again be collecting winter wear, underwear and socks, but also collecting funds for a new scholarship program for GLBTQ youth facing various levels of homelessness that despite the odds are working to continue their education.

I am very excited about this event! Every year in Minnesota there is an estimated 4,000 youth on the street that are homeless. An estimated 40% of them are GLBTQ.

Hope to see you all there! If you want more info about YouthLink go to:http://www.youthlinkmn.org/
