9:15 PM: Q&A with Seven King, the creator of Eden’s Garden, will follow the screening, along with a larger panel discussion about the experiences of TMOC, featuring King and two other Twin Cities based trans men of color.

Kenny Ngo is a queer Vietnamese-American poet seeking degrees in Creative Writing and Women’s Studies at Hamline University. He represented Hamline at CUPSI (College Union Poetry Slam Invitationals) in 2013 and 2014. Being the youngest son of immigrant parents, he first picked up a pen at age 1 and started writing by age 3. He writes about heritage, self-love, and the value of emotional honesty in self-care. In his free time, he pursues his dream of opening a bakery by baking various cheesecakes.
Kevin Kaoz Moore aka Kaoz is a native Clevelander and an award winning writer, actor, spoken word artist and educator. He began his artistic career appearing in countless plays, community theater projects, and has played supporting roles in two independent films. As grand poetry slam champion of his city, Kaoz represented Cleveland at the National Slam competitions two years in a row.
Kaoz has also been recognized for his activism and work in GLBT communities of color. He received the Harold PhilPot Youth Leadership Award from National AIDS Education & Services for Minorities for his groundbreaking work with Young Men who have sex with men of color. Kaoz most recently has completed the BlackEsque: QueErotica Tour which travelled through the West and Southwest with stops in L.A., Phoenix, Flagstaff, Alberquerque, Denver, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco and Oakland California. He also dropped his new full length album “The End is Beginning” in June 2015.
About the SEE MORE PERSPECTIVE’s ‘SEX TAPE’:
The sex-positive hip hop album you didn’t know you were waiting for.
Like many revolutionary acts, it started with a ridiculous idea. See More’s brother, producer Nye, made a folder full of beats sampling 1970’s pornos and suggested that See More write dirty sex raps over them.
And with that, See More Perspective, best known for his upbeat, positive, politically-and-culturally-conscious classicist hip hop, knew what he had to do.
Mixing the offbeat irreverence of the original concept with his own progressive, inclusive, sex-positive philosophy, See More crafted a subversive concept album that is equal parts funky, funny and feminist, tackling serious issues and concepts like consent, safe sex, and objectification with a sharp wit, unrelenting humanity, and one of the most agile tongues in the Twin Cities hip hop scene… so to speak.
SEX TAPE also features sex educators and activists like Alicia Steele and Kaoz shedding light on the issues, blending seamlessly into the 20 minute flow of boom bap instrumentals (provided by Nye), scratches (provided by Ganzobean), and See More himself– still one of the most insightful, underrated, and unique voices in indie hip hop.
The album’s dedication is telling: “This is dedicated to my niece and everyone who finds sex in the media at a young age without any parallel education.” SEX TAPE would be a unique accomplishment even if it were nothing more than a sex-positive rap project, but it ends up being much more than the sum of its parts. This is about how art can integrate education and entertainment, how hip hop can be a space to open ourselves up and have real conversations about real issues, and how we can understand sex –and love– in ways that acknowledge and celebrate our humanity, both individually and collectively.

In 1970, in Minneapolis, Mr. Baker and Mr. McConnell became the first same-sex couple known to apply for a marriage license. Turned down by Hennepin County, they fought to the United States Supreme Court, where they lost their case in a one-sentence dismissal that has reverberated in federal courts and played an indirect role in pushing same-sex marriage to the high court this year.

This month, a group of over 22 performers will be presenting PEARLS OVER SHANGHAI: THE COCKETTES MUSICAL in Minneapolis. This re-imagined staging of the bombastic musical of the early 1970s, which originally appeared in San Francisco and reflected a key moment for queer performance aesthetics, also contains caricatures of Asian cultures that seem out of step with the progressive queer community I want to be a part of in Minneapolis.
There is talk bubbling in the community about the use of satire, depiction of race, and queer performance context in which the work is being produced, and I feel like it’s important to create a space to process as a community. With the cooperation of Open Eye Figure Theatre, who graciously opened the doors of their studio right next door to the theater for this discussion, I’d like to invite anyone who is interested to join for an open discussion on the show, its intentions and impacts specifically related to race, following the 8pm performance on Sunday, October 11th. You do not need to see the show beforehand to participate in the discussion.
I am hosting this conversation as an independent queer white artist, and this is in no way an “officially” sanctioned event by the event’s producers, who I believe are also hosting post-show talk-backs. If you are interested in helping to organize this talk, please get in touch with me. I’m especially excited to step back and make space for queer people of Chinese/Asian heritage to facilitate the discussion if there is interest, but I would appreciate involvement from anyone who cares about this constellation of issues.
I’m very open to respectful thoughts and feedback.

Pearls Over Shanghai is a mock comic opera that drags us into the underbelly of Shanghai circa 1937. It is a mash up of The Mikado, Ziggy Stardust, Busby Berkeley, The Rocky Horror Show, every outdated, bad Oriental exotica movie ever made and a little of bit of John Waters. Pearls Over Shanghai, San Francisco’s 1970’s most unlikely hit musical, features a score of 24 exquisite numbers with music by Richard “Scrumbly” Koldewyn and lyrics by Link Martin. It is a show so hip and crazy that Rex Reed. Truman Capote, Angela Lansbury and even Andy Warhol went to see it when it played in NYC. Open your eyes to a new, yet old, form of outrageous theatre! You will not forget it!!
